CBS Axes Criminal Minds With A 15th And Final Season
All good things must come to an end. And after 14 good seasons, they really should. CBS has renewed long-running police procedural drama Criminal Minds for its 15th and final season. The 15th season, compromising of 10 episodes, will be shot back to back with the current 14 episode order. Before walking out, Criminal Minds would have aired a total of 325 episodes. Thus, making it one of the longest running shows in television history.
Cast And Crew
Criminal Minds follows the professional lives of a team of elite FBI investigators assigned with the responsibility of assessing the nation’s most eccentric criminal minds. The current cast on the CBS thriller includes Joe Mantegna, Paget Brewster, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, and Daniel Henney. The series finds its director in Jeff Davis, while Mark Gordon, Erica Messer, and Breen Frazier are its executive producers.
How Has The Criminal Minds Fared Over The Years
Criminal Minds first aired on September 22nd, back in 2002. While the show falls short on critical acclaim, with most of its season falling under the ‘average viewing experience’ category, the show has managed to fetch massive eyeballs for CBS. With a consistently favorable performance at the Nielsen scorecard, Criminal Minds manged to reserve seats in the top ten most watched list several times. Its present seasons; however, are generating dismal numbers, typically averaging a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers per episode. Criminal Minds has been a frequent Emmy nominee for its brilliant stunt coordination. Additionally, it is also a People’s Choice Awards favorite. It holds a total of seven People’s Choice nominations out of which, 3 it has won.
Amy Reisenbach, CBS’ EVP current programs says,
“It is the quintessential CBS hit. We are so proud to have aired it. It speaks to everything we do best, which is air quality television. It’s been successful not only on air but online, in syndication, internationally for ABC (Studios).”
Ending the show has in contemplation for some time now. Writer Erica Messer was looking forward to penning down a series conclusion with season 14. After an executive meeting; however, the show was extended to ten more episodes to tie up all the loose strings before setting the show off to sunset.
15 Years Of Controversy
Criminal Minds has been a regular subject for controversy. It has a reputation for its behind the screen drama. Mandy Patinkin left the show after just two seasons. CBS later fired Thomas Gibson in 2016 after an on-set altercation. Shemar Moore left to star on a different series. Recently, the show’s long-time director of photography, Greg St. Johns, faced multiple accusations of abusive behavior and sexual harassment towards crew members. He has since left the production.
