US rapper CupcakKe, real name Elizabeth Eden Harris, left a disturbing tweet last night (8 January) mentioning suicide. Soon after, she was taken to the hospital by Chicago police.

The 21-year-old tweeted “I’m about to commit suicide”. This immediately caught the attention of her friends, who then contacted the police to help find her and ensure her well-being.

In a separate post on Instagram, CupcakKe also shared a screenshot of the tweet and added: “Thank you for everything y’all have done for me, I really appreciate it.”

The posts sparked widespread concern and love for her from her fans on social media. More than 10,000 anxious people responded to the tweet to tell her how loved she is.

As of now, the Chicago Police Department has accounted for CupcakKe and confirmed her safety.

Updates on the Rapper’s Safety

Soon after CupcakKe made the suicide tweet, comedian Elijah Daniel, a close friend of the rapper, posted a series of updates on his own Twitter account. He was one of the several people who asked the Chicago Police Department to check up on CupcakKe. He also made sure to update her followers and reassure them while corresponding with her family, friends, and the police.

Reportedly, the police admitted CupcakKe to the hospital for a “mental evaluation” rather than injuries.

“Officers went out a few times to check on Elizabeth,” Chicago Police Department told Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Furthermore, Elijah tweeted: “I’ve never felt so relieved and sad at the same time.”

Support from Friends and Followers

Charli XCX, who CupcakKe collaborated with twice in 2017, posted on Twitter reminding the girl to stay strong:

Moreover, Iggy Azalea, who has also worked with CupcakKe previously, tweeted:

Dark Themes in CupcakKe’s Music

CupcakKe rose to fame in 2015 after two of her songs went viral on YouTube. She is known for using her music as a medium to speak out about different issues. These include themes such as female sexuality, masturbation, body image, etc.

Moreover, she’s also an avid supporter of the LGBT community and even released a song titled “LGBT”.

However, CupcakKe has also produced songs with darker themes. They range from subjects such as child abuse to homelessness. Most of these songs were written from her perspective, as a first person. She also has music related to suicide.

In 2016, she released a song titled “Pedophile”, which told the story of a 15-year-old who was abused by a man ten years older.

According to what she told Dazed magazine last year: “Being homeless, living in shelters, dealing with over-aged, older men that hit on me… all that is in the music.”

“The world should know it, so that the next girl will know how to deal with it when the situation comes to her. I’m not the only one who has to deal with that situation; I know it’s many, many girls.”

It’s obvious that CupcakKe’s family and fans might have missed out on earlier signs of her depression. Moreover, her songs tell the stories of traumatic events she had to face in the past. This is why it’s so important to take mental health seriously. We can’t afford to ignore anyone who displays suicidal tendencies or even self-depreciating behavior. It must always be considered with the utmost importance and seriousness. We never know what someone else could be going through.
