Oscars Shortlist Gives Historic Ovation To Foreign Language Films And Documentaries
With hardly a month left until the release of the official Oscars 2019 nominations on January 22nd, 2019, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has set out exclusive lists of 9 Oscar categories for the upcoming 91st Academy Awards. These shortlisted candidates will be further refined until the Academy finalize the actual nominations. It is for the first time in several years that the Academy has unveiled all of its short list at the same time. This time the Academy also recognizes the existence of underrated categories like Documentaries and Foreign Language films in its Oscars shortlists. Previously these categories have largely found themselves on the sidewalks of wide roads. Head of the Oscars 2019 nominations these Oscars shortlists give a glimpse of what the audience can expect from the upcoming awards show.
Some predictable features can be easily spotted on these lists. For instance the presence of Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma Mexico, and Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, Poland. Both fall under the category of the best foreign language films, something that was highly hyped and foreseen. Mary Poppins Returns too made a mark by scoring positions in the visual effects category and the original soundtrack category. The Place Where Lost Things Go and Trip a Little Light Fantastic also appear as candidates for the best original song.
Oscars Shortlist For The 91st Academy Awards Best Documentaries And Short Documentaries
The Academy’s Documentary Branch hand picked a total of 15 out of 160 documentary entries for the Oscars shortlist. The same department will further vote upon the selected candidates before they reveal who would actually occupy a space in the Oscars 2019 nominations list.

The shortlist for the Oscars 2019 Best Short Documentary includes the following films:
My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes
A Night at the Garden
Period. End of Sentence.
Women of the Gulag
Out of 104 submissions the Documentary Branch of the 91st Academy Awards selected a total of 10 short documentaries for the Oscars 2019 shortlist. The same members will vote again to filter out the Oscars 2019 nominations from the shortlist they have unveiled.
The Candidates For The Best Foreign Language Film
As for the Best Foreign Language Feature, yhe Academy has revealed the following shortlisted candidates:
Colombia, Birds of Passage
Denmark, The Guilty
Germany, Never Look Away
Poland, Cold War
South Korea, Burning
All the branches of the 91st Academy Awards collaborated to select 6 entries in the above shortlist. The Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee then filled in with three more entries. The nomination voters will screen all the nine films before the cast their ballots for the final Oscars 2019 nominations list.
The Oscar 2019 nominations list will be out on January 22nd, 2019. The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will air Sunday, Feb. 24, live on ABC.
