Riverdale is inspired by Archie Comics. If you still have not figured it out. Even with its darker themes and crime inspired plots, one thing was sure. The main character was always Archie. The All-American athlete and his trustworthy best friend Jughead Jones. And the two main girl characters, Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper. However, there have been other characters that have become popular as well. Instead of simmering it on low heat, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is bringing it to boil. In a recent interview, he revealed that they will be presenting an episode in which there will be different core characters. Namely, Cheryl Blossom, Kevin Keller, Josie McCoy and Reggie Mantle.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, show creator for Riverdale talked about in an interview with The Wrap. He revealed details about a new episode that they had recently worked on. It will be called Bizzarodale.
“One episode we’re doing is an episode called ‘Bizarrodale,’ which, instead of Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead being the Core Four, it treats Kevin, Cheryl, Reggie and Josie as the Core Four. And it’s a really fun episode…I’m really excited about that one.”
Long Time Coming for Bizzarodale
While we love Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. We love how they all have an unexplored darker side in the show. The show has gradually developed some of the other characters as well. These characters have slowly gathered a strong fan following.
The sassy redhead Cheryl “Bombshell” Blossom radiated from the screen from episode one. She was one of the main antagonists for our group of teens in season 1. However, we also saw a vulnerable side of the inspired bitchiness. Cheryl soon became a fan favorite for her unrelenting sass and dedication to self interest. With Cheryl identifying as an LGBTQ character, a whole dimension was added to her. Her relationship with Southside Serpents’ Toni Topaz became one of the most popular ships on TV, Choni. While she may not be one of the core four characters, she is definitely one of most equally loved and hated characters on Riverdale. Did we mention she’s also an accomplished archer. And she is an honorary Southside Serpent. If she is among the chosen core four characters in Bizzarodale, we are not complaining.
While we are talking about LGBTQ characters, Kevin Keller is one of the hottest gays on TV right now. Introduced as Betty Cooper’s best friend and somewhat of a side kick. Kevin has since then moved away from the relationship slowly. Especially when Betty started to date Jughead. And then she shattered his blessed heart because of Black Hood. However, Kevin is a character in development. He’s sweet and caring. He has often been seen as the consoling friend when needed for Betty and Veronica and anyone in general. He has a brewing romance on the show which has a Romeo and Juliet-esque vibe. So we are just grateful that Kevin Keller will be finally getting more screen time in this episode.
While Cheryl and Kevin are developing characters, we don’t know much about Josie. Other than she led the group Josie and the Pussycat. And her utmost dedication to making a musical career. In addition, we got to see her dad in season 1 who was not winning any parenting awards. The most character developed other than that has been her dynamic as potential step-siblings with Kevin Keller. We have yet to see more about Josie. Bizzarodale might offer a chance to do so.
Reggie Mantle was not a big player in season 1. Let’s admit that. He was just an aggressor. That might have to do something with actor Ross Butler leaving to join 13 Reasons Why. Charles Melton was cast in his place. Rest is history. Charles, despite the limited screen time, has made Reggie another character we love/hate. More recently, he helped the group rescue Archie. He has been helping Veronica establish her business. And we have been told that Reggie will be igniting a romance with Veronica. Before that happens, we will definitely want to know more about Reggie.
Will They Change?
While it is exciting news that the four core characters will be Cheryl, Kevin, Josie and Reggie. It is also giving us thoughts. What if the characters are not as they are in Bizzarodale. And show producers have got these four core characters act like the OG core characters.
Another Fun Episode
In addition to Bizzaroworld, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also mentioned another episode. It will be a noir featuring the cast in a suspenseful situation.
“And then we have an episode — the show has always been noir and always trending noir. But we’ve got an episode coming up that is completely noir: how it’s written, how it’s shot, the plot of it. And it’s really fun.”
We can’t wait until the show returns from it’s winter break on CW.
