For Millennials. By Millennials.
Everyone was shaken after witnessing the highlight of the 2022 Oscars. You know what moment we’re talking about, right? When Will Smith goes on stage to hit Chris Rock in front of the audience and whole world. It was after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair. Basically, Jada shaved her head back in 2018 because of alopecia, a severe hair loss condition.
Jada and Will both didn’t seem pleased with the joke. So much so that Will took matters into his own hands and physically hit Chris Rock. Later on, he also shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.”
Of course, Twitter has A LOT to say on the matter.
There are multiple hashtags trending right now just on this incident. While some are praising Will Smith for it, some are shocked and are taking Chris Rock’s side. However, some are just finding the whole situation absolutely hilarious, while some are making it quite political.
Here’s what Twitter has to say about the whole debacle
Many were trying to grasp what had actually happened.
Another fan shared what Will Smith did couldn’t be scripted.
Some funnier reactions on the Will Smith hitting Chris Rock debacle
Twitter never fails to take an opportunity to make some clever and witty jokes about a situation. And this 2022 Oscars highlight was just a prime example of that. People were having a lot of fun talking about it.
This is in reference to Will Smith’s show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-air’ where Will gets sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle because he’s getting difficult to control.
The scene is from the famous TV show ‘Euphoria’ where Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie and Alexa Demie’s character Maddy get into an altercation in front of an audience during their school play. It does seem quite similar to Chris Rock being hit by Will Smith.
What a time to be alive, right?
Hmm, this would have probably made Will Smith more furious! August Alsina was someone Jada Pinkett-Smith was romantically involved with when she was on a small break with Will. Later on, both Jada and Will have shared that they are in a supportive and loving open relationship and marriage.
Many don’t agree with Chris Rock’s joke but also think Will Smith didn’t have to hit him
Facts are facts. Will Smith did physically hit Chris Rock on live television. Whether or not you agree with why Will did it, violence still did occur. Many people on Twitter were commenting on that.
Many are saying that this isn’t the most controversial thing to happen at the Oscars due to its dark past:
Some people were calling this hitting incident the most “controversial” thing to ever happen at The Academy Awards. But many Twitter users rightfully pointed out how much more controversial events have occurred at the Oscars in the past.
Roland Polanski was arrested in 1977 for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl by drugging and manipulating her. And in 2003, Roman Polanski went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture for ‘The Pianist’. That moment was definitely uglier than Chris Rock hitting Will Smith.
This is in reference to Harvey Weinstein (who’s currently in prison for sexual assault and rape), Woody Allen (who is alleged of sexual abuse and molestation by his former adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow), and Roman Polanski (who was charged for raping a minor girl).
Some were definitely on Will Smith’s side
Many Twitter users were praising Will Smith for pulling the hitting incident and then proceeding to win the Oscar for Best Actor.
Ending with this little note here
Undoubtedly, of course, the internet and social media will be obsessed with this one slap for weeks to come. I, for one, am curious if Chris Rock will be invited to Jada’s ‘Red Table Talk’ to clear the air.
Lastly, people are also wondering if Will’s Oscar will be taken from him because he broke the rules of The Academy.
