Ellen Pompeo Slams Hollywood For Its Lack Of Diversity
Ellen Pompeo has recently renewed her contract Grey’s Anatomy for its 15th and 16th season. Ellen Pompeo stars on the show as Shonda Rhimes. She is currently the highest-paid drama actress on television. Reports also suggest that Pompeo makes $20 million per year. In a recent interview, Pompeo grabbed an opportunity to call out a magazine for lacking diversity.
Pompeo recently held serious talks with Gina Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union, and Emma Roberts. The ladies discussed porter’s magazine women in television. There Ellen Pompeo pointed out that the makeup industry does not reflect upon the real diversity of the globe. Rather it centers itself around what it finds most appealing.
Ellen Pompeo Is Calling Out Hollywood For Lack Of Diversity
The 49-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star said
“This day has been incredible, and there’s a ton of women in the room. But, I don’t see enough color. And I didn’t see enough color when I walked in the room today.”
Ellen is calling out Hollywood for its lack of diversity. Ellen believes that women representation does not mean that only a certain race of women get a voice or space to raise their voice. The female community is extensive and vast. Moreover, it compromises women from all walks of life, and from all spheres of life. Ellen Pompeo says that color or race cannot determine if a woman can star on a magazine cover or on a TV show.
Ellen Pompeo even cited a recent example calling out Hollywood for its lack of diversity. She said,
“I had a meeting with a director… I said, ‘When I show up on set, I would like to see the crew look like the world that I walk around in every day. And I think it’s up to all productions to make sure that your crew looks like the world we see.”
Grey’s Anatomy Actress Talks About Responsibility
Ellen Pompeo says that they have institutionalized the issue. Hence it is their responsibility to speak up about the diversity problem in every room, dimension, stage or capacity. Calling out Hollywood at its lack of diversity, Pompeo said that until and unless everyone starts to speak up about the issue a solution will not arise.
Gina Rodriguez and Gabrielle Union Also Call Out Hollywood For Lack Of Diversity
Later Gina Rodriguez and Gabrielle Union furthered the claims put forward by Ellen Pompeo. Rodriguez pointed out that it was an individual responsibility to include people of color in the industry. When Rodriguez did not find enough diversity in the shows she worked for, she started her own company. This was because, she would be in more control to allow for a greater sense of diversity.
Gabrielle Union also claimed that a part of the reason why actresses do not call out Hollywood for its lack of diversity is that they fear repercussions. Gabrielle Union claims that it was a lack of bravery that people did not call out Hollywood for its lack of diversity.
Ellen Pompeo ended her account by saying that at times people do not feel like speaking up. This is because they fear that their voices will go unheard. Hence, Pompeo speaks for all those women who deserve to be in that particular room but they aren’t.
