Ben Affleck Responds to Backlash Over Jennifer Garner Comments, Says They Were Taken Out Of Context
Recently, Ben Affleck got a lot of heat for his comments about his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three kids. His comments seemed to imply that his alcoholism and substance abuse problems were because of his marriage to Garner. The general public were quick to defend Jennifer Garner and call out Ben Affleck for his “untrue comments”. Now, he’s saying that the backlash he received “hurts” his feelings. He added that his comments were being taken out of place. And in actuality, he had said the exact opposite of what people are highlighting.
Ben Affleck opens up about his Howard Stern interview
In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Ben Affleck shared the story of how his comments on the Howard Stern show were taken the wrong way. Affleck had shared with Stern how he would still be an alcoholic if he was still married to ex-wife Jennifer Garner. Many people took this as a claim that he was blaming her for his substance abuse.
“We talked a lot about my family, divorce and alcoholism … and how you have to be accountable and loving. I was really happy with it. Then I start seeing all this stuff come up on Twitter. And I was like, what is this?”Ben Affleck tells Jimmy Kimmel
Then he figured out that a few websites had used click-bait to sensationalize the story and made it seem like he was blaming Jennifer Garner. He said that the comments made him out to look like “the worst, most insensitive, stupid, awful guy”.
“It said that I had blamed my ex-wife for my alcoholism. That I was trapped in this marriage. Just made me out to be the worst, most insensitive, stupid, awful guy.”Ben Affleck tells Jimmy Kimmel
But he said that the quotes were taken out of context. And that he actually doesn’t blame Jennifer Garner for his alcoholism:
“That’s not true. I don’t believe that — it’s the exact opposite of who I am, what I believe, and I would never want my kids to ever say a bad word about their mom.”Ben Affleck tells Jimmy Kimmel
Moreover, he shared that he understands that celebrities have to deal with a lot of attention and that he’s okay being the “sad Batman” or the “meme-guy”. But he draws the line when it comes to his kids and family. He called the whole incident inappropriate and that it hurt his feelings. Ben Affleck also emphasized that he and Jennifer Garner respect each other deeply and always put their kids first.
However, many critics were still not buying his explanation. They still maintain that Ben Affleck doesn’t like to take accountability for his own problems.
