Dolly Parton Says She’s Addicted to Helping Others!
The country queen, Dolly Parton, is undoubtedly one of the most wholesome and talented singers in the industry. And she’s giving us all another reason to love her. She’s recently revealed that the one thing she’s addicted to is helping others and giving them as much as she can. It’s also the reason why she loves music so much, as it brings joy to others so much.
The country singer is ‘addicted’ to giving!
Thankfully, it’s not a harmful addiction. The ‘Jolene’ singer shares that she absolutely loves giving and helping people any way she can:
“I’m kind of addicted to the feeling of giving. Knowing that I’m doing something good for someone else.”
Dolly Parton is one of the few celebrities that are very generous when it comes to donating for the welfare of others. She opened up her Imagination Library back in 1995. From then till now, about 170 million children’s books were donated via the Imagination Library! Over the years, she’s also donated for other amazing programs such as Save The Music Foundation, Boot Campaign (that helps veterans deal with PTSD and physical injuries). As well as the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.
Her donations to the medical and educational sector are immense
She also focuses on improving the educational rates of her communities by reducing the drop-out rate of highschool in Sevier Country Tennessee. Dolly Parton started the ‘Buddy up Program’ where she would ask each 7th and 8th grader to “buddy up” with their class mate. They would each get five hundred dollars if both of them graduated high school. As a result, the high school’s drop-out rate went from 35% to just 6%!
Another part of the Dollywood Foundation is a $15,000 scholarship to any high school student that wants to pursue a dream of theirs and need the funds for college.
In 2007, she also raised $500,000 at a benefit concert for LeConte Medical Center in Sevier County. Moreover, her organizations Dollywood and Dixie Stampefe Dinner Theater added an additional $250,000 each to the project. Dolly Parton raised a total of $1 million and the hospital successfully opened in 2010!
In 2016, the Great Smoky Mountains wildfires affected many families. Parton’s Dollywood Foundation gave cash grants to the affected families as well as college scholarships to high school seniors whose homes has been lost in the fires.
The country singer also spoke out against the “bathroom ban” in North Carolina and has been openly supportive of transgender and LGBTQ rights!
“I think everybody should be treated with respect. And I don’t judge people, and I try not to get too caught up in the controversy of things. I hope that everybody gets a chance to be who and what they are.”
In 2017, She also donated $1 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her niece received leukemia treatment at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital so it was in honor of her.
And in 2020, Parton generously gave $1 million to Vanderbilt University to fund the research for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Despite her selflessness, Dolly Parton says she does not want people to idolize her
The ‘I will always love you’ singer says that she definitely loves the adoration she gets for her music and philanthropic efforts. But she does not want anyone to worship her. Dolly Parton reveals that receiving that kind of attention isn’t comfortable for her and it’s not her dream to be someone’s idol. The singer simply wants to care for others. She wants to people to remember her this way as well:
“I have to honestly tell you. I was a little bit skeptical of being put on the cover as one of the People of the Year. Because that’s a lot of pressure. But, yeah, it’s like, I am not all that. I’m glad that I stand for enough stuff to where I’m not the worst person in the world.”
Dolly Parton also admits that there’s a religious aspect to her thinking:
“But I don’t want to be worshiped because there’s a scripture in my Bible that talks about idol worship. And I see that happening all the time with movie stars and these celebrities. People literally worship them more than they worship God. And I just — I cringe at it sometimes. But if I can set an example, then that’s great.”
Well, Dolly Parton is definitely the gift that keeps on giving! She’s probably not going to stop anytime soon in her efforts to help make the world a better place!
