For months, Interstellar star Matthew McConaughey had been flirting with the idea of running for Governor of Texas in the 2022 mid-term elections. It felt like he was trying to test the water and see which side of the aisle he’d like to put himself. However, it seems like he has given up on the decision, for now. The actor told his millions of followers on Twitter on Sunday that he won’t be running for Texas Governor in 2022.

In a video message on Sunday, Matthew McConaughey said that he took his time to explore and understand his politics. However, he felt it would be better if he focused on the private sector instead of a public office right now. Moreover, he thanked his fans for even considering him for political leadership, saying:

As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership. It is a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.

McConaughey also said in his video that he has learned “a lot” studying Texas and American politics. And the conclusion that he has derived for now is that “our politics needs new purpose. That we have divides that need healing.” This shows that McConaughey is clearly leaning towards a more centrist approach in politics, refusing to tilt either way of the American political spectrum. He said:

Establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life. Organizations that have a mission to serve and build trust while also generating prosperity — that’s the American dream. Politicians, the good ones, can help us get to where we need to go … but let’s be clear, they can’t do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves.

How Matthew McConaughey was trying to shape his race for Texas Governor since March

In March of 2021, Matthew McConaughey was giving “true consideration” to running for Governor of Texas in 2022. Back then, he too was focused on healing the nation and becoming a leader of the people at a time when there was a lot of division. The Dallas Buyer’s Club actor said:

I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?

Again, his words focused more on healing rather than dividing, as McConaughey added:

The two sides got to talk. Hey, where can we reach across the aisle here? Find a compromise for the betterment of all of us?

The Texas Governor race took a particular twist when Beto O’Rourke launched his campaign with the Democratic Party to compete with the incumbent Greg Abbott, who is looking forward to winning the governorship of Texas for the third time. O’Rourke ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in 2018 and the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 as well. And the party considers him to be their best chance of ousting Abbott in 2022.
