Recently, The New York Times released a Janet Jackson Malfunction documentary. According to reports, it explores the unfortunate incident that happened at the Super Bowl Halftime show in 2004. While Jackson was the main artist performing Justin Timberlake made his debut. During the show, he accidentally exposed her breast which became a huge controversy. Unfortunately, the Control artist had to face the brunt alone and her career suffered a lot. The documentary tries to find the truth behind the incident.

In 2004, Janet Jackson faced a huge setback at the peak of her career

At the height of her career, Jante Jackson got to perform at Super Bowl Halftime. While she had an established career, Justin Timberlake had just started his solo career. His appearance was kept a secret until the end. During the show, Janet Jackson performed and wowed her fans. In the middle of her performance, Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance and stunned the crowd. Right at the end, he stripped off a part of the garment from Janet Jackson’s costume and exposed her breast for a split second. Shortly after, CBS and MTV started to get complaints about the incident. Unfortunately, Janet Jackson had to face a lot of backlash and criticism. In the end, people urged her to apologize.

Recently, The New York Times released Malfunction documentary revisiting the incident

Earlier this year, New York Times explores Spears’ conservatorship with its documentary, Framing Britney Spears. In a similar attempt, they revisited the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident and released the Malfunction documentary. While many of the executives and producers of CBS and MTV talked about it, only one member of the Jackson family is a part of the documentary. According to the critics, the documentary fail to do what it set out to do. For most of it, they explored Janet Jackson’s career and fame. At the same time, the Malfunction documentary attempts to talk about the impact pop culture has on people. Since the release of the documentary, Justin Timberlake has been the target of trolls.

When the producers asked her to comment, Janet Jackson refused. Similarly, people close to her have said that she is not happy with the release of Malfunction. According to her former stylist, Wayne Scot Lukas, Janet Jackson is not interested. He said:

“She wants that documentary to go away. She didn’t ask for a ‘Free Janet’ documentary. She’s not interested. She asked us not to do it. She wants to tell her own story. They’re going to discuss it, and she’ll have her final say. I’m not privy to her final say, I just need to be aware of my story and I’ve been loyal for 18 years.”

At the moment, Janet Jackson is working on her own documentary which will come out in 2022.
