Right now, the hype around Spider-Man: No Way Home revolves around the potential of seeing Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and Tobey Maguire teaming up as Spider-Men. But, with that going on, people seem to forget the villains. Even though everyone knew of Garfield and Maguire potentially making an appearance, people didn’t really expect past villains from the Spider-Verse to make a comeback on the screen. And now, Holland has explained how Marvel kept this such a big secret.

Despite Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s appearance being public knowledge, people didn’t know much about the villains. Few people were expecting Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans to reprise their roles as Norman Osborne (Green Goblin), Dr. Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus), Electro, The Sandman, and Dr. Curtis Connors (The Lizard). Somehow, they got overlooked in the hype surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home. But, it turns out Marvel went out of its way to keep their participation in the movie a secret.

While talking to the massive Los Angeles fan event for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland revealed Marvel used big black cloaks to shield Foxx, Molina, and Dafoe from the public eye. He said:

It’s actually a funny story when I met Willem for the first time. Obviously, at that time, all of the villains in the film, it was a huge secret that they were in the film. So they would walk around set with these cloaks on. Naturally, these guys were very excited to be coming back and bringing these roles back to life. I just sort of bumped into this guy in a cloak. I was like, ‘Watch out, mate.’ He took his cloak off, and I almost got really scared — Oh shit, the Goblin’s here.

How it was like working with Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe for Tom Holland on Spider-Man: No Way Home

Moreover, Tom Holland also revealed how amazing it was to work with Molina and Dafoe. He revealed how they adapted to changing times and different directors as well as actors. On the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home, they had certain ownership over Spider-Man. Tom Holland told Total Film:

It was interesting having those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way, and… I’m talking about Alfred and Jamie and those guys. To see Alfred come in, and have to adapt and change to the way that the films are made, but also change director, and also [the fact that] I’m now Spider-Man. It was really interesting to see these actors adapt and change what they were doing to fit the modern era.

In a way, Marvel is reassembling the Sinister Six, which is a group of villains that Spider-Man faces regularly in the comics. It features Doc Ock, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. Of course, not all of these are featured in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But, assembling such a lineup of past Spider-Man villains is in itself a monumental feat, even after Endgame and Infinity War.

That said, Holland is still adamant in refuting the main rumor. For months, he’s stood firm in saying that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are not featuring in Spider-Man: No Way Home. We have to commend his consistency, but I think Marvel fans can now see through it. He further said:

People don’t believe me when I say that [Maguire and Garfield] are not coming back. But people are going to have to believe me at some point. It means a lot to me. The first time you see Doc and the rest of the characters that come back, it’s so exciting – and it’s such a huge moment in cinematic history. It’s three generations coming together.

Despite such strong rumors, fans will only receive a confirmation on December 17th, 2021. That’s the day when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits the theatres. Make sure to mark your calendars and let us know in the comments about what you think.
