Those who lived through the 2000s will always remember Tobey Maguire as the real Spider-Man, regardless of how admirable a job Tom Holland did in the MCU’s version of the character. But, many forget that Kirsten Dunst also received tons of praise for her portrayal of Mary Jane. In fact, for millions of fans, she is the first face that comes to their mind when they think of Peter Parker’s love interest. But, unfortunately, that popularity did not translate into financial success, as Dunst recently revealed the pay disparity between her and Maguire.

While talking to The Independent, Kirsten Dunst revealed that there was a “very extreme” pay gap between her and co-star Tobey Maguire while the duo worked together in the Sam Raimi trilogy. She openly admitted it while talking to the news outlet. She said:

The pay disparity between me and Spider-Man was very extreme.

At first, Kirsten Dunst did admit that she didn’t put much thought into it. At the time, she was relatively young and new in Hollywood and was just happy to feature in such a huge film. However, Dunst was no fool and gradually became well aware of her significance in the Spider-Man trilogy. Even though the sequel brought almost $800 million to the franchise, she did not get to see much of it. But, she did know of her significance, telling the news outlet:

I didn’t even think about it. I was just like, ‘Oh yeah, Tobey [Maguire] is playing Spider-Man.’ You know who was on the cover of the second Spider-Man poster? Spider-Man and ME.

Moreover, this is not the first time that Kirsten Dunst has brought up the pay gap between her and her male co-stars. While talking to Variety in 2017, she brushed on the topic, saying:

Because I was young, I thought, ‘Oh wow, I’m getting paid a lot of money for the Spider-Man movies. But definitely, the men were getting paid more.

That said, it doesn’t seem like Kirsten Dunst’s link to the masked crusader is entirely over. Apart from solid rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their role as “Spider-Men” in the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, there are also rumors of Dunst making a cameo in the film. Even though she has dispelled those rumors as false, we can’t be sure about it. This is because Garfield has also dismissed rumors of his appearance in the movie. So far, all we can say right now is that we’ll have to wait till December 17th, 2021 to know what’s happening for sure.
