The past decade has been dominated by the MCU and its incredible financial prowess. That is the reason why Disney bought Marvel. And soon after, launched Disney+ to take advantage of the franchise at a digital level too. But, it looks like Disney still has a long way to go before overtaking streaming giants like Netflix. Or, does it? According to recent statistics, Red Notice outperformed Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on streaming numbers by quite a margin!
Red Notice decimates Shang-Chi in streaming numbers, amassing over twice as many views
Netflix’s $200 million-dollar mega film, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, has performed admirably on the streaming platform. According to statistics from Samba TV, Red Notice managed to gather 4.2 million households in its opening weekend debut. And when you compare these numbers to Shang-Chi, the Netflix original has pretty much decimated the Marvel film along with several other titles.
According to official Netflix statistics, Red Notice had the biggest opening day in Netflix’s film history. But, it’s a lot more impressive than that. The 4.2 million households that watched the movie dwarfed Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on Disney+, which managed to be watched by 1.7 million households. Shang-Chi was available to stream for free on Disney+ from 12 November onwards, around the same time that Red Notice became available on Netflix. But, that’s not all.
Red Notice blew away every single movie ever released on Disney+, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max. Samba TV measured the movie to be above the debut weekend of HBO Max’s Mortal Kombat (3.8 million), Wonder Woman 1984 which also featured Gadot (2.2 million), and Dune (1.9 million). Samba TV considers one view by a household who tuned in for more than five minutes.
That said, Shang-Chi managed to gather north of $400 million at the box office
That said, it is important to have a bit of context. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is also open in theatres in both North America and across the globe. And despite that, it still managed to gather views from 1.7 million households on Disney+. At the box office, Shang-Chi has amassed more than $430 million worldwide, which is quite impressive in a post-pandemic world. Therefore, as great a success as Red Notice is, things may have been different had Shang-Chi been a Disney+ exclusive.
Red Notice follows an FBI profiler (Johnson) in the midst of a heist. He has to team up with the world’s most notorious art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to catch the world’s most wanted criminal, “The Bishop” (Gadot). Red Notice also got a one-week theatrical release and managed to earn around $1.5 million in its opening weekend.
