After becoming the youngest Nobel Prize winner and advocate of girls’ education, Malala Yousafzai has become a household name. Therefore, the news of her marriage to Asser Malik surprised the entire world. In a small, intimate ceremony, the couple had a nikkah in front of their families. It was held in Yousafzai’s house in Birmingham. Previously, her views about marriage had raised some eyebrows. However, it seems that she did indeed change her mind.

At the age of 11, Malala Yousafzai decided to face her oppressors and take a stand

In 2008, she started to anonymously blog about her life in Swat for BBC. At that time, Tehrik-i-Taliban was taking over Swat and making lives miserable for the people of that region. They forced people to stop watching TV, banned women from stepping outside their homes, and put a halt to girls’ education. However, Malala Yousafzai stood up for herself and continued her education. In 2012, the Taliban shot her and she received life-threatening wounds. Shortly after, the news of her attempted murder became a global headline. Therefore, she was transferred to the UK for further treatment. Since then, Malala Yousafzai has been residing in Birmingham with her family. After she recovered, Yousafzai founded Malala Fund and advocates for girls’ education. At the age of 17, she became the youngest Nobel Prize Laurette in history.

In June this year, her views on marriage surprised many and upset a few

During her interview with British Vogue, Malala Yousafzai talked about many interesting things. However, it was her views about marriage and nikkah which grabbed the attention of many. She said:

“You know, on social media, everyone’s sharing their relationship stories, and you get worried…If you can trust someone or not, [and] how can you be sure.”

Furthermore, Malala Yousafzai talked about her parents’ opinion about the subject and said:

“I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership? My mum is like, ‘Don’t you dare say anything like that! You have to get married, marriage is beautiful’.”

At the same time, she admitted that her views about everything in life are always evolving and changing.
