Last week, Angelina Jolie-starrer Marvel film, Eternals was released worldwide. While it had a slow opening, the film is picking up pace with every passing day. However, some countries have banned the film for the most peculiar reason. According to reports, Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait have stopped the release of the film because of same-sex intimate scenes. After the news came out, Jolie criticized these countries and expressed her disappointment.

Directed by Chloe Zhao, Eternals fulfilled the void left by Avengers.

Although Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, announced it in 2018, Eternals was released a few weeks ago this year. Interestingly, this film is shot mostly on location, unlike the rest of MCU films. According to the story, ten superpowered Eternals come together when the Earth is attacked by Deviants. It is the evil counterpart of the immortal alien race. While they must assemble to fight their enemy, Eternals are not allowed to interfere in human matters. The cast of the film includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harrington. According to Marvel Studios, this film is a part of Phase Four of MCU films.

After a slow start at the box office, Angelina Jolie starrer is breaking the records.

Initially, Eternals had the Marvel Studios giants worried. Although it had a decent start at the box office with $71 million, it is nothing compared to other Marvel films. Despite the initial disappointment, Angelina Jolie starrer is the fourth biggest film released in the USA after the pandemic. At the same time, it picked up numbers when started to release in overseas cinemas. By the weekend, Eternals had bagged almost $161 million. This makes it the second biggest release of 2021 worldwide. Eternals is currently right behind Vin Diesel’s F9: The Fast Saga which earned $163 million.

After the Gulf countries banned Eternals, Angelina Jolie reacted.

Although the entire world waited anxiously for the release of Eternals, few countries straight up banned it from releasing. According to reports, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait stopped the Eternals from releasing. While the rest of the world is praising the film for the most diverse cast and characters, Gulf countries have banned it for the exact same reason. After Disney refused to edit the same-sex couple kissing scenes, they put a halt to the release. Angelina Jolie has expressed her disappointment over the news and said:

“I’m sad for [those audiences]. And I’m proud of Marvel for refusing to cut those scenes out. I still don’t understand how we live in a world today where there’s still [people who] would not see the family Phastos has and the beauty of that relationship and that love. How anybody is angry about it, threatened by it, doesn’t approve or appreciate it is ignorant.”

Despite the ban, the fans of the film will find a way to watch the film. However, the ban is unfortunate in this day and age.
