TikToker receives backlash for wearing blackface while donning on Dora The Explorer costume

It’s 2021 and people are still wearing blackface for Halloween. Over the weekend, a TikToker, Kay Wilschere came under-fire when she dressed up as Dora the Explorer. For her costume, she tanned her face so much that it almost looked like a Black person. Shortly after the TikTok went viral, people expressed their anger and disappointment. So far, the TikToker has not responded to the backlash.

In the past, many celebrities have faced criticism for wearing blackface.

Whenever Halloween costumes are planned, people try to make sure it does not offend anyone. While people would let it pass in the past, things have changed a lot. Despite that, many celebrities choose to wear blackface without any regard for Black people. However, nothing gets past the keen eye of internet nowadays. The celebrities who have put on a blackface include Kylie Jenner, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Ted Danson, Julianne, Hough, Shane Dawson, Jon Hamm and Paula Deen.

Recently, a TikToker, Kay Wilschere went viral for her Dora the Explorer costume.

In a TikTok video, Kay Wilschere is seen standing and dancing with a friend. For Halloween, she opted to dress up as Dora the Explorer. If you don’t know who that is, Dora the Explorer is the character from children’s animated series produced by Nickelodeon channel. According to the synopsis, Dora Marquez is a Latina girl who embarks on different adventures. After the TikTok came out, people instantly noticed that Wilschere was wearing a blackface to highlight the ethnicity of Dora the Explorer. Despite being white, Kay Wilschere decided to offend with her costume.

As expected, people had a lot to say. From expressing their disappointment to anger, they said it all. According to many, blackface should not even be an option as a Halloween costume. In this day and age, people should know better and must educate themselves. According to one Instagram user:

And then we’ll see a post tomorrow saying “Sorry. I will educate myself.” 🙄

Meanwhile, another said:

We really still doing this in 2021 ? 🥴 come on now

One user highlighted the fact that Dora the Explorer is not that dark.

On the other hand, one user talked about why anyone would wear a blackface, knowing about the backlash.

Meanwhile, one user pointed out another important aspect of Wilschere’s costume.

Despite the backlash on wearing blackface, Wilschere has not responded yet. Although it might be late, she should apologize.
