Warner Bros. approve Dune sequel after strong box office performance

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune has breathed renewed life into the box office for Warner Bros. By earning $40 million in North America and around $220 million worldwide, it is now th studio’s biggest release of the year. And so, Dune: Part One will now officially get a sequel, as Warner Bros. has given Dune: Part Two the green light.

Based on the book franchise by legendary science fiction writer Frank Herbert, Dune has been an amazing success. It far exceeded expectations of earning $30 million at the North American box office. By giving Warner Bros. their biggest opening of the year, the studio immediately approved a sequel for the movie, named Dune: Part Two.

Apart from the incredible North American success, the movie also performed exceptionally by making $220 million so far. And what makes this even more impressive is the fact that Dune was simultaneously released on HBO Max as well. Despite being available to watch for North Americans on the comfort of their couch, the movie still managed to amass such impressive numbers at the box office. Even on HBO Max, Dune turned out to be one of the biggest releases on the streaming platform. It also outperformed Zack Snyder’s Justice League debut. Not only that, but the movie also boasted incredible performances from Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and many others.

Even though Dune: Part Two got approved after the release of Dune, the movie was still called Dune: Part One. And the movie receives some amazing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes as well. It got an 83% ratings, while receiving an audience score of 91%. Every single review describes it as a cinematic masterpiece that entirely engulfs the user in its visuals. With Dune, Denis Villeneuve truly won over fans of the franchise. For decades, many thought Dune was impossible to be adapted for movies. But, not only did he prove the critics wrong, but he also earned a right to make a Dune sequel. Dune: Part Two will hit the theaters on October 20, 2023.
