It’s no secret that Dune made a solid debut in its opening weekend at the domestic box office with $40 million. It may not sound like pre-pandemic numbers, but in reality, it’s the biggest opening Warner Bros has had in 2021. Moreover, the movie also exceeded its expected numbers of around $30 million. But, that’s not all. Dune also performed incredibly well on its HBO Max debut. In fact, it outperformed Zack Snyder’s Justice League or opening weekend viewership numbers!

With a star-studded cast that included Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, among many others with Denis Villeneuve at the helm, Dune was bound to be a success. And the movie did prove to be that. Apart from the performance on the box office, Dune received stellar critical reviews. Now, new data has emerged that reveals the movie was an incredible success on HBO Max as well.

Samba TV provided data to Variety and revealed that almost 1.9 million households watched Dune from Thursday to Sunday. With these viewership numbers, Dune has surpassed Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which got around 1.8 million household views. However, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic is not at the top of HBO’s best movie debuts. That title goes to Mortal Kombat. Furthermore, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and Space Jam: A New Legacy rank above Dune in the list. The list goes like:

Mortal Kombat – 3.8 million
Godzilla vs. Kong – 3.6 million (Wednesday-Sunday)
The Suicide Squad – 2.8 million
Wonder Woman 1984 – 2.2 million
Space Jam: A New Legacy – 2.1 million
Dune – 1.9 million
Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 1.8 million
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – 1.6 million
Those Who Wish Me Dead – 1.2 million
Tom & Jerry – 1.2 million
The Many Saints of Newark – 1 million
The Little Things – 1 million

Dune’s box office success is the reason for relatively low HBO Max numbers

That said, the numbers that Dune amassed at the box office dwarfed all other movies, as it became Warner Bros.’s biggest film debut in 2021. Moreover, the studio had advertised it as an unmissable big screen event. That said, Denis Villeneuve was quite vocally against Warner Bros. decision to release Dune on HBO Max at the same time as its theatrical release. He told Total Film:

First of all, the enemy of cinema is the pandemic. That’s the thing. We understand that the cinema industry is under tremendous pressure right now. That I get. The way it happened, I’m still not happy. Frankly, to watch Dune on a television, the best way I can compare it is to drive a speedboat in your bathtub. For me, it’s ridiculous. It’s a movie that has been made as a tribute to the big-screen experience.

He joined a list of other high-profile directors like David Chase and Christopher Nolan who criticized Warner Bros. for this decision. The latter eventually ended up concluding his relationship with Warner Bros. and moving to Universal studios.
