It’s sad day for Friends fan as news of an important cast-mate’s death makes the headlines. Gunther, played by James Michael Tyler, has passed away at the age of 59 after battling prostate cancer. The actor appeared in 150 episodes of NBC’s Friends which starred Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.
His manager shared the news:
“Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning. If you met him once you made a friend for life. [He] is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno, the love of his life. Wanting to help as many people as possible, he bravely shared his story and became a campaigner for those with a prostate to get a… blood test as early as 40-years-old.”
Though, Gunther wasn’t a part of the core six of the Friends group, he was quite popular with the fans worldwide. He was a coffeeman that worked at Central Perk and had a big crush on Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel Greene.
James Michael Tyler even made an appearance at the latest Friends reunion where he said the role of Gunther changed his life forever:
“It was the most memorable 10 years of my life, honestly. I could not have imagined just a better experience. All these guys were fantastic and just a joy to work with. It felt very, very special.”
He got his cancer diagnosis back in 2018 but despite that he appeared in two short movies, ‘The Gesture and the Word,’ and ‘Processing’.
