Lorde Claims Kanye West And Kid Cudi Stole Her Set Design But They Didn’t
Lorde claimed that Kanye West and Kid Cudi stole her stage design idea but set designer Es Devlin set the record straight
Kanye West and Kid Cudi performed in a concert on Sunday. They used a floating, rectangular box. Lorde pointed out that they stole her set design. Es Devlin, Kanye’s set designer, set the record straight. She clarified that she had designed the concept way before Lorde used it.
Lorde Claims Theft by Kanye West and Kid Cudi
Lorde is not someone who has been mixed up in celebrity drama. Her BFF Taylor Swift has been in tabloids forever. Lorde has been able to avoid that attention. However, when she thought someone stole from her, she could not sit quietly. Performing at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, Kid Cudi and Kanye West used a floating rectangular box. It was transparent and glowing with various colored lights. The performance was for Camp Flog Gnaw festival. Something seemed familiar to Lorde. Of course, it did! She had used the same concept for her Coachella performances in March of this year!
In order to prove her point, she shared pictures of her Coachella performance on her stories. That was followed by Kid Cudi and Kanye West’s performance pictures. After sharing two sets of pictures for comparison, she moved on to a message. Lorde called out Kanye and Kid Cudi directly;
“I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists feel inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves. But don’t steal—not from women or anyone else—not in 2018 or ever.”
Furthermore, Lorde added;
“But don’t steal—not from women or from anyone else—in 2018 or ever.”
Kid Cudi and Kanye West have not responded to these accusations. Someone else did it for them.
Es Devlin Sets The Record Straight
TMZ pointed out that set designer Es Devlin had designed the box for them. They also mentioned that Es had been Kanye’s set designer for over ten years. She has helped him design show sets for years. Her portfolio with Kanye tours including; Touch The Sky, Glow in the Dark, Watch the Throne, YEEZUS and Saint Pablo.
So it was Es’s work that came under fire. She was quick to point out that Lorde’s claims were wrong. Kanye West and Kid Cudi had not stolen Lorde’s stage design. Es posted a picture of another set that featured the floating, rectangular box.
The picture caption read;

She also said in an interview that she came up with the concept way before Lorde did. Which means that it was never Lorde’s original concept. In some speculation, it also came out that Lorde had hired Es Devlin to design the floating box for Coachella.
Additionally, sources close to Kanye West also mentioned that Kanye had never seen a Lorde performance. It was highly doubtful that he would copy something he has never seen.
