Whenever one hears about the hay days of the Beatles, there are always some incredible stories that the fab four have had to share over the years. Be it the Beatle sandwich, or Paul McCartney and John Lennon “pleasuring” themselves in front of each other. But there’s one incident that has gained a lot of notoriety over the past decades. And that was Bob Dylan making the Beatles smoke up for the first time in their lives. Now, Sir Paul McCartney has shed some light on the matter as well, detailing how that experience was.

In an upcoming memoir with The Times of London, Sir Paul McCartney detailed the first time he and The Beatles tried weed in a New York hotel room with fellow musician Bob Dylan. And it was some experience for the fab four, as Sir Paul explained:

What happened is that we were in a hotel suite, maybe in New York around the summer of 1964, and Bob Dylan turned up with his roadie. He’d just released ‘Another Side of Bob Dylan.’ We were just drinking, as usual, having a little party. We’d ordered drinks from room service – scotch and Coke and French wine were our thing back then – and Bob had disappeared into a back room.

Later on, Paul explained that Ringo Starr also disappeared for a while. And when he returned, the other Beatles members realized that he was looking a “bit strange”. Paul then recalls:

He said, ‘I’ve just been with Bob, and he’s got some pot,’ or whatever you called it then’. And we said, ‘Oh, what’s it like?’ and he said, ‘Well, the ceiling is kind of moving; it’s sort of coming down.’ And that was enough. After Ringo said that, the other three of us all leapt into the back room where Dylan was, and he gave us a puff on the joint.

It took a while for the joint to kick in, but when it did…

However, as many experienced people reading this might know, it took a while for it to kick in. Paul McCartney said that he and John Lennon along with George Harrison kept “puffing away” because they couldn’t feel anything after the first hit. But then, it suddenly started kicking for the rest of The Beatles, as Sir Paul recalls:

Suddenly it was working. And we were giggling, laughing at each other. I remember George trying to get away, and I was sort of running after him. It was hilarious, like a cartoon chase. We thought, ‘Wow, this is pretty amazing, this stuff.’ And so it became part of our repertoire from then on.

Afterward, however, Paul McCartney wrote that he and the Beatles, later on, acquired their own weed. And it wasn’t that difficult at all for them, as Sir Paul said:

To tell you the truth, it just showed up. There were certain people you could get it from. You just had to know who had some.

Ringo Starr once clarified that Bob Dylan was not the dealer of The Beatles

Despite this incredible story, in the past, Ringo Starr has categorically explained that Bob Dylan was not their dealer. In an interview with Conan O’Brien, Ringo explained that Dylan was just there in the room when the Beatles got high for the first time. He dispelled a long-standing myth, which was folklore in music history.

However, the days of the Beatles doing drugs and psychedelics are long gone. In a 2015 interview, Paul McCartney said that he stopped smoking ever since he became a grandfather.

I don’t do it anymore. Why? The truth is I don’t really want to set an example to my kids and grandkids. It’s now a parent thing. Back then I was just some guy around London having a ball, and the kids were little so I’d just try and keep it out of their faces.
