Only after months, Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled their dispute. A few months back, Black Widow was released in the cinemas and Disney+. The film came out after it was delayed due to the pandemic. After the release, the Marvel star filed a lawsuit against Disney for not complying with the contract. However, the network was adamant that they did state everything beforehand. This led to a PR battle which also prompted many celebrities to support Johansson. But it seems that all is well and the issue has been settled outside the court.
After a lot of delay, Black Widow was released in July
Due to the pandemic and lockdown worldwide, Black Widow had to face many delays and hurdles. However, Disney and Marvel decided to release Scarlett Johansson starred in July this year. Initially, it was supposed to release only in cinemas. Later, the network announced that it will also stream on Disney+. Although it was one of the most anticipated films, it was not received like other Marvel films. At the same time, people argued that it did nothing for the character, Natasha Romanoff. While the film itself could not gather the viewers, it did lead to a dispute between Scarlett Johansson and the network.
Shortly after the release, Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney.
In July, Scarlett Johansson filed a case in Los Angeles County Superior Court. According to her, Disney promised that the film will be a theatrical release. However, they decided to stream it on Disney+ as well. At the same time, she was led to believe that there will be a 90-day gap before Black Widow will start streaming. She said that Disney breached their contract and withheld information. Scarlett Johansson also said that it will affect her paycheck and earnings. Meanwhile, the network claimed that they had stated everything clearly. Despite the pandemic, the film grossed more than $218 million. Similarly, Disney+ made almost $60 million with just the subscription fee.
In the latest news, Scarlett Johansson and Disney resolved the issue out of the court
Although the details of the settlement are unknown, Johansson and Disney have settled the matter. In a statement, Scarlett Johansson said:
“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”
On the other hand, content chairman for Disney Studios, Alan Bergman said:
“I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding Black Widow. We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, we look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror.”
With this settlement, we can be sure to see her in more projects by Marvel and Disney. However, she made way for many other celebrities who stood up to the studios. After Scarlett Johansson filed the lawsuit, Elizabeth Olsen came out in support of her. Similarly, Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, and John Krasinski also found the courage to question the networks and studios they were working with.
